The Scot, 26, won under the blazing sun of centre court 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 against the world number 1.
The win sparked scenes of jubilation around the country.

Murray sets up Djokovic final
Andy Murray beat Jerzy Janowicz 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 to set up a Wimbledon final with Novak Djokovic.
Despite being 4-1 down in the third set, Murray eventually beat the Polish giant.
Djokovic featured in the longest Wimbledon semi-final (4 hours, 44 minutes) as he beat Argentina's Del Potro in 5 sets.

Bartoli & Lisicki to face off in Wimbledon final
15th seed Marion Bartoli will play 23rd seed Sabine Lisicki in the women's Wimbledon final.
Bartoli beat Belgian Kirsten Flipkens 6-1, 6-2 and Lisicki beat Radwanska in 3 sets.
A very weird year saw the top three seeds, Serena Williams, Azarenka and Sharapova, all go out before the quarter-finals.
